وَإِذَا أَرَدْنَا أَن نُّهْلِكَ قَرْيَةً أَمَرْنَا مُتْرَفِيهَا فَفَسَقُواْ فِيهَا فَحَقَّ عَلَيْهَا الْقَوْلُ فَدَمَّرْنَاهَا تَدْمِيرًا

سورة الإسراء
(17/16) And when We wished to destroy a country, We sent Our Commandment to the notables (the rich who live in comfort, who lead a life of luxury). Yet they made mischief therein. Thus the Word (of Allah) is justified against them. So We destroyed it (the country and its people) with utter destruction.
