وَلَقَدْ أَرْسَلنَآ إِلَى أُمَمٍ مِّن قَبْلِكَ فَأَخَذْنَاهُمْ بِالْبَأْسَاء وَالضَّرَّاء لَعَلَّهُمْ يَتَضَرَّعُونَ

(6/42) And certainly We sent (Messengers) to nations (communities) before you. Then We seized them with distress and affliction in order that they might implore.
