(2/142) The fools among the people will say: “What has turned them from their Qiblah [prayer direction (towards Jerusalem)] on which they were”? Say: “The East and the West belong only to Allah. He guides whom He wills to the Path (that leads to Allah)”. (2/143) Thus We have made you a medium (just, balanced, good, superior, virtuous) nation, that you be witnesses over mankind and the Messenger be a witness over you. And We made the Qiblah (prayer direction towards Kabe) on which you were, only to (distinguish and) know those who depended on (followed) the Messenger from those who would turn on their heels. And it is surely hard except for those whom Allah caused to attain guidance (have Hidayet) (it is not hard for them); and Allah is not going to waste your faith. Truly Allah is Affectionate, the Most Merciful towards mankind. (2/144) Verily, We have seen the turning of your face towards the heaven (waiting for the Divine Decree). Surely, We shall turn you to a Qiblah (prayer direction) that shall please you; so turn your face in the direction of the Inviolable Sanctuary (Al-Masjid Al-Harâm in Makka), and wherever you may be, turn your faces towards it. Those to whom the Book was given know this to be the truth from their Lord. And Allah is not Unaware of what they do. (2/145) And even if you were to bring to those who have been given the Book every sign, they would not follow your Qiblah (prayer direction), nor would you follow their Qiblah; nor will they follow each other’s Qiblah. If, after all the knowledge you have been given, you follow their desires, then you would surely become amongst the wrong-doers (unjust, evil-doers). (2/146) Those to whom We gave the Book recognise him (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) as they recognise their own sons, and a party of them most surely conceal the truth while they know (it). (2/147) The truth is from your Lord, therefore you should not be of the doubters. (2/148) And for every one (for all the nations, communities) there is a direction toward which he turns; so vie with one another in good works. Wherever you may be, Allah will bring you together. Truly, Allah is Powerful over all things. (2/149) So from wheresoever you depart, turn your face towards the Al-Masjid-Al-Harâm, that is indeed the truth from your Lord. And Allah is not Unaware of what you do. (2/150) And from wheresoever you start forth, turn your face towards Al-Masjid-Al-Harâm; and wherever you are, turn your faces towards it, so that men may have no argument against you except those of them that are tyrants, so do not fear them and fear Me (fear that My Love upon you will be decreased), that I may complete My Blessings on you and that (so) you may attain Guidance. (2/151) Thus We have sent among you a Messenger (a Prophet) from among you so that he may read (and explain) to you Our Verses and purify you (your souls’ hearts) and teaches you the Book and Wisdom and teaches you that which you did not know (beyond Wisdom). (2/152) Therefore remember Me so that I may remember you, and be thankful to Me, and do not deny Me. (2/153) O you who believe (who are âmenû, who wish to reach Allah before death) seek assistance (from Allah) through patience and (Necessity) Prayer; surely Allah is with the patient (As-Sâbirûn, the owners of Patience). (2/154) And do not say of those who are killed in the Way of Allah: They are dead! Nay, they are alive, but you do not perceive (their existence). (2/155) And We will most certainly try (test) you with fear and hunger and loss of property and lives and fruits. And give glad tidings to the patient. (2/156) Who, when a misfortune befalls them, say: “Surely we are for Allah (We are created to render our spirits and surrender ourselves to Allah) and to Him we shall surely return (and we shall surely reach Him before death)”. (2/157) Those (who are certain of returning back to Allah in the life of this world) are they on whom are benedictions from their Lord and mercy and it is they who are the guided ones (in Hidayet). (2/158) Verily, As-Safâ and Al-Marwa are of the Symbols (sacred indications) of Allah (that shows the places of worship). So it is not a sin on him who performs Hajj or ‘Umrah (pilgrimage and visit) of the House (Kabe) to perform the going round (Tawâf) between them both. And whoever does good of his own volition (does extra Tawaf) truly Allah is Grateful (Responsive to gratitude), All-Knowing. (2/159) Surely those who conceal the clear proofs (evidences) and the Guidance (the spirit’s reaching Allah before death), which We have sent down, after We have made them clear in the Book for them, they are the ones whom Allah will curse and those who curse shall curse them (too). (2/160) Except those who repent and amend [purify and refine their souls’ hearts] and manifest (the truth) (these are not cursed). These, I will accept their repentance. And I am the Oft-Relenting, the Most Merciful. (2/161) As for those who disbelieve (hinder and hide the spirit’s returning Allah before death, that is, the Guidance-Hidayet) and die while they are disbelievers, upon them is the Curse of Allah and the Angels and men altogether. (2/162) They will abide in it (under the curse) forever, their torment will neither be lightened nor will they be looked at. (2/163) And your God is one God! There is no god but He. He is the most Beneficent, the Most Merciful. (2/164) Most surely in the creation of the heavens and the earth and in the alternation of the night and the day and the ships which sail through the sea with that profits men, and the water (rain) which Allah sends down from the sky, then gives life with it to the earth after its death and scatters in it all kinds of moving creatures and in the veering of the winds and the clouds made subservient between the sky and the earth, there are Signs for a people who are mindful. (2/165) And of the men there are some who set up equals (idols, partners) with Allah. They love them (what they take for partners, associates) as they love Allah. (Yet) those who are âmenû (who believe) are stronger in love for Allah. If only those who tyrannize could have seen that during the torment, the Power is wholly Allah’s and that Allah is Severe in torment (punishment). (2/166) Then those who were followed (depended on) disowned those who followed (depended on) them and they saw the torment. Then all their relations (ties) are cut asunder. (2/167) And those who followed (depended on) others besides Allah said: “If only there had been for us a return (to the worldly life), we would disown them as they have disowned us”. Thus Allah will show them that their deeds are lost. And they will never get out of the Fire either. (2/168) O mankind! Eat of that which is lawful and clean on earth, and do not follow the footsteps of Shaitan (Satan) Verily, he is to you an open enemy. (2/169) He commands you only what is evil and indecent (Fahsha), and that you should say against (about) Allah what you do not know. (2/170) And when it is said to them: “Follow what Allah has sent down”, they said: “Nay! We follow what (the way) we found our fathers upon”. Even if their fathers were not mindful nor did they attain Guidance (Hidayet)? (2/171) And the parable of those who disbelieve is as the parable of one who calls out to that which hears no more then a call and a cry; (they are) deaf, dumb and blind. So they can not be mindful (understand). (2/172) O you who believe (who are âmenû)! Eat of the lawful and clean things that We have provided you with, and be grateful to Allah, if it is indeed He Whom you serve (to Whom you became servants). (2/173) He has only forbidden you what dies of itself (carrion) and blood and the flesh of swine, and that which is slaughtered as a sacrifice for others than Allah. But if one is forced by necessity without willful disobedience nor transgressing due limits, then there is no sin on them. Truly, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (2/174) Verily, those who conceal certain things from what Allah has sent down of the Book, and purchase a small gain with it, they eat into their bellies nothing but fire. Allah will not speak to them on the Day of Resurrection, nor will He purify (exonerate) them. And for them there will be a painful torment. (2/175) Those are they who purchase Misguidance (Dalâlet) at the price of Guidance, and torment at the price of Forgiveness. Then what is it that makes them so patient against the Fire! (2/176) This (torment) is because Allah has sent down the Book with the truth. And those who seek differences in the Book are in open schism. (2/177) It is not All-Birr (that reflects the true belief, acts that make men worthy of Paradise) that you turn your faces towards the East and the West, but All-Birr is (the quality of) the one who believes in Allah and the Last Day (the later day that one reaches Allah, the day of Guidance, spirit’s returning back to Allah) and the angels and the Book and the Prophets; and gives from his wealth that he loves to the kinsfolk, to the orphans, and to the needy (old folks who are incapable of working) and to the stranded, and to those who ask and to set slaves (captives) free, keeps up the Prayer, and gives the Zakât (the alms) and who fulfill their covenant when they make it (with Allah and men), and who are patient in extreme poverty and ailment and at the time of fighting (during the battles). Those are they who are truthful (veracious) and those are they who are the pious [the owners of piety (takvâ)]. (2/178) O you who believe (who are âmenû)! The Law of Retaliation (of Equality in punishment, Al-Qisâs) is prescribed for you in the matter of the murdered: the free for the free and the slave for the slave, and the female for the female. But if any remission is made to anyone by his (aggrieved) brother, then prosecution (for the blood wit) should be made according to custom, and payment should be made to him in fairness; this is an alleviation from your Lord and a mercy; so whoever exceeds the limit after this, then for him there is a painful torment. (2/179) And for you there is life in retaliation, O Ulû’l elbâb! (Those who have attained to the continuous remembrance of the Name of Allah and thus know the innermost secret treasures of Allah!), that you may become the pious (Al-Muttaqûn, the owners of takwâ). (2/180) Bequest is prescribed for you when death approaches one of you and leaving behind wealth for parents and near relatives, according to Ma’rûf (custom) is a duty (to be fulfilled, a right) upon those who are pious (the owners of piety, “takwâ”). (2/181) Whoever then alters it (the bequest) after he has heard it, the sin of it then is only upon those who alter it; surely, Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (2/182) But he who fears a testator to be unjust or commit sin, and upon this he makes peace between the parties, there shall be no sin on him. Certainly Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (2/183) O you who believe (who are âmenû)! Fasting is prescribed for you, as it was prescribed for those before you, so that you may become the pious. (2/184) For a fixed number of days; but if any of you is ill or on a journey, then (he shall fast) a (like) number of other days; and those who are not able to do it (fasting, because of old age or an illness that is not recoverable) may effect a redemption by feeding a poor (night and day); so whosoever does good (increases his fasting or his redemption) it is better for him. And fasting is better for you if you only knew. (2/185) The month of Ramadan in which the Qur’ân was sent down as a Guidance (a means of reaching Allah, Hidayet) to men and clear proofs of the Guidance and the Discernment (Criterion between right and wrong) by Huda (Allah). Therefore whoever of you (sights) is present in the month must fast in it, and whoever is sick or upon a journey, then (must fast) a (like) number of other days. Allah desires for you ease; and He does not desire for you difficulty, and He (desires) that you should complete the number and that you should magnify Allah for His having guided you and that you may be grateful (for all the ease). (2/186) And when My servants ask you about Me, then surely I am very near (to them). I answer the call of the prayer when he calls upon (invites) Me. They should also answer My Call (invitation) and believe in (become âmenû-wish to reach) Me so that they may attain “Irshad” (Immaterial Maturity). (2/187) It is made lawful for you to go unto your wives (in sexual relations) on the night of the fast. They are a garment for you and you are a garment for them. Allah knows that you acted unfaithfully to (betrayed) your souls, so He accepted your repentance and pardoned you. Therefore you may now approach them intimately and seek what Allah has ordained for you. Eat and drink until the white thread becomes distinct from the black thread of the dawn, then complete the fast till nightfall. And do not approach them if you are in I’tikâf (confining oneself in a mosque for prayers and invocations leaving the worldly activities) in the mosques. These are the limits of Allah, so do not go near them (the limits). Thus does Allah make clear His Verses (Signs) for men that they may become the pious. (2/188) Do not eat up one another’s property among yourselves by false means (unjustly) nor give bribery to the judges so that you may knowingly eat up a part of the property of others sinfully. (2/189) They ask you about the crescent moons. Say: “These are signs to mark fixed periods of time and the pilgrimage for mankind”. And it is not Al-Birr (righteous deed that makes one worthy of Paradise) that you enter the houses from their backs (as they used to during the period of Ignorance) but Al-Birr is what makes one pious (the owner of piety, “takvâ”) So enter the houses through their proper doors, and become pious. (2/190) And fight (kill) in the Way of Allah with those who fight with you (kill you) and do not exceed the limits, surely Allah does not love those who exceed the limits (the transgressors). (2/191) Kill them (those who started the fight against you) wherever you find (catch) them and drive them out from where they drove you out (Makka), and Al-Fitnah (mischief) is worse (severer) than killing, and do not fight with them near Masjid-i Haram (the Sacred Mosque) unless they start fight with you, but if they do fight (kill) you (there), then fight back (kill). Such is the punishment of the disbelievers. (2/192) But if they desist (fighting, disbelieving), then Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (2/193) And fight them until there is no more Fitnah (mischief) and the Religion is only for Allah, but if they desist, then there should be no hostility except against the tyrants. (2/194) The forbidden month is for the forbidden month and all forbidden things are in reciprocity. Then whoever attacks you, you attack likewise the same amount. And become pious and know that Allah is surely with the pious (the owners of takwâ). (2/195) And give (your property) in the Way of Allah (to others) and do not throw yourselves into danger and become the best of the best, surely Allah loves the good-doers (“Muhsinûn” those who have submitted their physical bodies to Allah). (2/196) And complete (perform) the pilgrimage (the Hajj) and the visit (Umrah) for Allah. But if you are prevented (because of an inevitable hindrance), (send) whatever offering (sacrifice) is easy to obtain and do not shave your heads until the offering reaches to its destination; but whoever of you is sick or has an ailment of the head (and for this reason he is obliged to shave his head before the offering arrives at the place of sacrifice), he must pay a ransom either by fasting or by almsgiving, or by offering a sacrifice. And if you are in safety, then whosoever combines the visit (Umrah) with the pilgrimage (the Hajj) must offer such offering(s) as he can afford; but he who cannot find (any offering) should fast for three days during the pilgrimage and for seven days when he returns (to his home), making ten days in all. This is for those whose family is not present (dwell) at Masjid-i Haram. And become pious (for Allah). And know that Allah is Severe in punishment. (2/197) The pilgrimage is in the well-known months; so whoever determines the performance of the pilgrimage in them (by putting on the pilgrimage dress), there shall be no intimate approach to a spouse nor veering to sin nor quarreling amongst one another in the pilgrimage; and whatever good you do, Allah knows it; so make provision (for yourselves) (with righteous deeds) for surely the best of the provision is (to be the owner of) piety. Therefore be pious towards Me, o Ulu’l elbâb (the owners of the secret divine treasures of Allah because of their continuous remembrance of the Name of Allah)! (2/198) It is no sin on you to seek the Virtue from your Lord, so when you come from “Arafat” in groups, remember the Name of Allah at Al Mash’ar Al-Harâm (the Sacred Monument). Though before that (Guidance-Hidayet)you were certainly of those who were in Misguidance. (2/199) Then hasten on from where the multitude hasten onward, and ask Allah for His Forgiveness. Truly, Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (2/200) So when you have performed your sacred rites (concerning the pilgrimage) remember (repeat the Name of) Allah as you remember your forefathers or with a far more remembrance. But of the men, whoever says: “Our Lord! Give us in the world, for him there is no share in the Hereafter”. (2/201) And of them, whoever says: “Our Lord! Give us what is good (and beautiful) in the world and what is good (and beautiful) in the Hereafter and protect us from the torment of the Fire”. (2/202) For them there will be a share out of what (the degrees) they have earned. And Allah is Swift at reckoning. (2/203) And remember (repeat the Name of) Allah (by saying: “Allah is the Greatest”) during the numbered days; then whosoever hastens off in two days (to return from Mina), there is no sin on him, and whoever remains behind, there is no sin on him, (this is) for those who has takwâ (piety) and have takwâ (piety) towards Allah and know that you shall be gathered unto Him. (2/204) And of the men there are some whose speech may please you in this worldly life, and he calls on Allah to witness as to that which is in his heart, yet he is the most fierce of adversaries. (2/205) And when he turns back (and leaves), he strives on earth to make mischief and to destroy the crops and the progeny and Allah does not love mischief. (2/206) And when it is said to him: “Have Takwâ (Piety) towards Allah, pride (of the soul) takes him with sin (carries it off to sin by hindering him) therefore Hell is sufficient for him, and certainly it is an evil resting-place”. (2/207) And of the men is he who sells his soul to seek the Pleasure of Allah. And Allah is the most Affectionate (full of Kindness) to His servants. (2/208) O you who believe (became âmenû)! Enter into Submission (Islam) one and all and do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Verily! He is to you a clear enemy. (2/209) Then if you slide back after the clear signs have come to you, then know that Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. (2/210) Do they then wait for Allah and the angels to come to them in the shadows of the clouds and (so) the order is finished off (completed)? And all orders are returned to Allah. (2/211) Ask the Children of Israel how many clear Signs (proofs, miracles) We gave them. And whoever changes (alters) Allah’s Blessing after it has come to him, then surely Allah is Severe in punishment. (2/212) Beautified is the life of this world for those who disbelieve, and they mock at some of those who believe (due to their poverty). But those who have takwâ (piety) will be above them on the Day of Resurrection. And Allah gives means of subsistence to whom He wills without measure. (2/213) Mankind were once one nation (community). And Allah sent (brought to life) the Prophets as bearers of glad tidings and as warners. And with them He sent down the Book with truth to judge between the men in matters wherein they differed. And only those to whom (the Book) was given differed about it after the clear signs had come to them, revolting among themselves (through hatred, one to another). Then Allah by His Leave guided (delivered to Hidayet) those who believed (became âmenû) to the truth (Hidayet) of that wherein they differed to explain onto others. And Allah guides whom He wills to the Path (directed towards Allah). (2/214) Or did you think that you would enter Paradise unless the state of those who have passed away before you has not come upon you? Distress and affliction befell them and they were shaken violently, so that the Messenger and those who believed (became âmenû) with him almost said: “When (will come) the Help of Allah”? Certainly, the Help of Allah is near, is it not? (2/215) They ask you what they should spend (in the Way of Allah)? Say: “Whatever you spend of good (in the Way of Allah) must be for the parents and the near of kin and the orphans and the needy and the stranded, and whatever you do of good, truly, Allah knows it well”. (2/216) War is enjoined on you, even though it be disliked by you; and it may be that you dislike a thing and it is actually good for you and it may be that you love a thing and it is actually bad for you. And Allah knows while you do not know. (2/217) They ask you concerning fighting in the Forbidden Month. Say: “Fighting in it is great (sin), but hindering (mankind) from Allah’s Way and denying Him, and (forbidding) Mesjid-i Haram and turning its people out of it (Mekke), are even greater (sin) with Allah; and mischief is even greater(sin) than killing”. And they will not cease fighting with you until they turn you back from your religion, if they can; and whosoever of you turns back from his religion, then he dies as an unbeliever, and all his works shall go wasted in this world and the Hereafter, and they are the inmates of the Fire. They shall abide in it forever. (2/218) Verily, those who believe (became âmenû) and emigrate and strive hard in the Way of Allah, these hope for the Mercy of Allah and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful. (2/219) They ask you about wine and gambling. Say: “In both of them there is a great sin and (some) means of benefit for the mankind, but the sin of them is greater than their benefit”. And they ask you what they ought to spend (for the sake of Allah)? Say: “That which is beyond your needs”. Thus Allah explains to you the Verses, so that you may ponder (over the wisdom contained in them). (2/220) They ask you about the world and the Hereafter and the orphans, Say: “Improving them is good, and if you are mixed with them (if you are living with them) they are then your siblings”. And Allah knows (separates) the mischief-maker from the improver. And if Allah had wished, He could have put you into difficulties. Truly, Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. (2/221) Do not marry the (Mushrik) women who assign partners to Allah until they believe (became âmenû) and certainly a believing concubine is better than a (free) woman who assigns partners to Allah, even if you like her. Do not marry (your women) with men who assign partners to Allah until they believe (became âmenû). A believing slave is better than a (free) man who assigns partners to Allah, even if you like him. It is them who invite (you) to fire. Yet Allah is inviting you to Heaven and Forgiveness with His Will and explaining His Verses to mankind. It is hoped that they will be mindful through this. (2/222) And they ask you about menstruation. Say: “It is a pain; therefore keep aloof from the women during menses and do not go near them until they have become clean; then when they have cleansed themselves, go to them the way Allah has commanded you”. Surely Allah loves those who repent and He loves those who keep themselves clean. (2/223) Your wives are a plantation for you, so go into your plantation as you will and advance for yourselves (good deeds that will increase your degrees), and have piety (takwâ), and know that you shall meet Him. Give glad tidings to the believers. (2/224) Do not make Allah an obstacle, because of your oaths, to your (that keep you from) being the owners of All-Birr, to your having piety (takwâ) and to your making peace between men, and Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (2/225) Allah does not call you to account for what is vain in your oaths, but He calls you to account for what your hearts have gained (for the negative degrees, vile and sins) and Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most-Gentle. (2/226) Those who swear that they will not go in to their wives should wait four months; so if they go back (to their wives by giving expiation before the term comes to an end), then Allah is surely Oft-Forgiving, Most-Merciful. (2/227) And if they (who take such oaths) decide upon divorce, then Allah is surely All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (2/228) And the divorced women should keep themselves in waiting for three menstrual courses (they should examine whether they got pregnant); and it is not lawful for them that they should conceal what Allah has created in their wombs, if they believe in Allah and the Last Day; and their husbands have a better right to take them back in the meanwhile if they wish for reconciliation. And they (women) have rights similar to those of (men) in kindness (in a just manner, according to what is reasonable=Ma’rûf) but the men (their rights) are a degree above them, and Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. (2/229) The divorce is twice, after that, either you retain her on reasonable terms (Ma’rûf) or release her with kindness (Ihsân). And it is not lawful for you to take from them anything you have given them, except when both fear that they can not keep up the limits of Allah, there is no sin on either of them for what she gives up to become free thereby. These are the limits of Allah, so do not exceed them, and whoever exceeds the limits of Allah, these it is that are the wrong-doers (unjust). (2/230) And if he divorces her (for the third time after he has divorced her for the second time), then she is not lawful unto him thereafter until she has married another husband (and then she became free from that marriage too). Then, if the other husband divorces her, it is no sin (blame) on both of them if they return to each other (by marriage), provided they feel that they can keep up the limits of Allah, and these are the limits of Allah, which He makes plain for a people who know. (2/231) When you have divorced the wives and they have reached the end of their waiting periods, then either retain them according to custom and usage (on reasonable basis, with Ma’rûf) or set them free on reasonable basis. But do not take them back to cause their loss so that you exceed the limits (infringe upon her rights), and whoever does this, he indeed is unjust to his own soul. And do not take Allah’s Verses (Signs) for a mockery and remember the Blessing of Allah upon you and that which He has sent down to you of the Book and the Wisdom, admonishing you thereby; and have piety (Takwâ) towards Allah and know that Allah is the Knower of all things. (2/232) When you have divorced the wives, and they have reached the end of their waiting periods, then do not prevent them from remarrying their (former) husbands if they agree among themselves in a lawful manner (bi’l ma’rûf, according to custom and usage, on a reasonable basis); with this is admonished he among you who believes in Allah and the Last Day, this is for you to become more purified and more refined, and Allah knows and you do not know. (2/233) And the mothers (married or divorced) should suckle their (born) children for two whole years, (that is) for those who desire to complete the term of suckling, and their nutrition and clothing must be upon the father according to custom and usage (on a reasonable basis, bi’l ma’rûf); no soul shall have a burden laid on him greater than he can bear. A mother should not be made to suffer harm because of her child, nor should the one for him the child was borne (the father) because of his child. And a similar devolves on the heir. But if both desire weaning by mutual consent and counsel, there is no sin on them, and if you wish to engage a wet-nurse for your children, there is no sin on you so long as you pay what you promised for according to custom and usage (on a reasonable basis); and have piety (takwâ) towards Allah and know that Allah is All-Seeing of what you do. (2/234) The wives of those who are made to die and leave them behind, should keep themselves in waiting for four months and ten days; then when they have fully attained their term, there is no sin on you for what they do for themselves in a lawful manner (on a reasonable basis, bi’l ma’rûf) and Allah is Well-Acquainted with what you do. (2/235) And there is no sin on you if you make a hint of betrothal (to the women who are in the waiting-period) or conceal such a desire in yourself. Allah knows that you will remember them, but do not give them a promise in secret except (a hint of betrothal) that you speak in a lawful manner (according to usage, on a reasonable basis). Do not resolve on the tie of marriage before the end of their waiting-period. And know that Allah knows what is in you, therefore beware of Him. And know that Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Gentle. (2/236) There is no sin on you if you divorce the women while yet you have not touched them, nor appointed unto them their “Mahr” (bridal-money). Provide for them with fairness (according to custom and usage) the wealthy according to his means and the straitened according to his means: This is a binding duty upon the Muhsinûn. (2/237) If you divorce them before you have touched them and you have appointed for them the Mahr (bridal-money) then paying half of what you have appointed is upon you, unless they (the women) relinquish (it) or (the whole amount) is remitted by him in whose hand is the marriage tie (the bridegroom). And to forgo and give (the other half as well) is nearer to Takwâ (having piety). And do not forget the Merit between you. Truly, Allah is All-Seeing of what you do. (2/238) Guard Salâvâts (the light of benedictions coming from Allah, prayers) and the Requirement Prayer (continue it in uninterrupted manner). And stand up truly obedient to Allah (in reverence mixed with deep respect for a long time). (2/239) And if you fear (vital danger) then (perform your prayers) while on foot or riding. And when you are in safety, then remember Allah in the manner He has taught you what you did not know (how you will remember Allah). (2/240) And those of you who are made to die and leave behind wives should bequeath for their wives a year’s maintenance and residence without turning them out, but if they (wives) leave, there is no sin on you for that which they do of themselves, provided it is on a reasonable basis. And Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. (2/241) And for the divorced women, maintenance (should be provided) in fairness (on a reasonable basis). This is a duty on the pious (owners of takwâ). (2/242) Allah thus makes clear to you His Verses in order that you may be mindful. (2/243) Have you not seen those who went forth from their homes, for fear of death and they were thousands. Yet Allah said to them: “Die” (and they died); again He gave them life. Truly, Allah is full of Grace to mankind but most of them are not grateful. (2/244) And fight in the Way of Allah, and know that Allah is All-Hearing, All-Knowing. (2/245) Who will lend to Allah a generous loan so that He may multiply it to him many times over. And Allah straitens and enlarges (the man’s sustenance according to the Divine Law) and to Him you shall be returned. (2/246) Have you not seen the notables of the Children of Israel after Moses, when they said to a Prophet of theirs: “Raise up (appoint) for us a king, that we may fight in the Way of Allah”. He (prophet) said: “May it not be that you would not fight if fighting is ordained for you”? (Notables): “Why should we not fight in Allah’s Way while we have been compelled to abandon our homes and our children”? But when fighting was ordained for them, they turned back, except a few of them, and Allah knows the wrong-doers (tyrants). (2/247) And their Prophet said to them: “Surely Allah has raised Tâlût (Saul) to be a king over you”. They said: “How can he hold kingship over us while we are fitter than him for the kingdom, and he has not been given enough wealth”. (The prophet): “Verily, Allah has chosen him above you and He has increased him abundantly in knowledge and physique (strength) and Allah grants His kingdom to whom He wills”. And Allah is All-Embracing (His knowledge and Mercy includes everything), All-Knowing. (2/248) And their Prophet said to them: “Surely the sign of his kingdom is, that there shall come to you the (wooden) chest in which there is tranquility (Sakînah) from your Lord and a remnant of that which the house (family) of Moses and the house of Aaron left behind, carried by the angels”. Verily, in this is a sign for you if you are indeed believers. (2/249) Then when Saul set out with the army, he said: “Surely Allah will try you with a river; whoever then drinks from it, he is not of me, and whoever does not taste of it, he is surely of me, except he who takes (of it) in the hollow of his hand”. Yet, they drank of it, all, except a few of them. So when he crossed it together with those who believed with him, they said: “We have today no power against Jâlût (Goliath) and his army”. Those who were sure that they would meet their Lord said: “How often has a small party vanquished a bigger party by Allah’s Leave”. And Allah is with the patient. (2/250) And when they went out against Goliath and his army they said: “Our Lord! Pour down upon us patience, and make our steps firm and assist us against the disbelieving people”. (2/251) So they routed them by Allah’s Leave and David (Dâvûd) killed Goliath and Allah gave him (David) the kingdom (after the death of Saul) and the Wisdom, and taught him of that which He willed. And were it not for Allah’s repelling some men with others, the earth would indeed be full of mischief but Allah is full of Virtues upon the worlds. (2/252) These are the Verses of Allah: We read (and explain) to you with truth and most surely you are (one) of the Messengers.
